The Importance of the biblical events timeline by bimini.tops.bimiuvx
The Importance of the Biblical Timeline
Often many Christians both new and old have no idea when certain historical events took place, and when important biblical figures lived. It really isn’t uncommon for people that are well versed in the bible to become confused as to when one personage lived, and when another event happened. But what happens when a Gnostic asks a Christian something regarding biblical history. Today an answer like: “mmm! Im not very sure about when it happened, but What’s important is the message,? just doesn’t cut it. This type of answer makes Christians appear unknowledgeable about what they preach.
Of course, it is a common problem, and understandable why timelines would be confusing, because the bible is not just one book. But actually it is the collaborative effort of many authors. Some of these authors wrote about longer periods than others, and others wrote on the same events, and they wrote over a thousand year period. But it is difficult to explain this to a non believer. On the other hand when a Christian can inform anyone of when a certain event took place, he is considered knowledgeable in the area.
Up until now the knowing whether it was the Ark of the Covenant or Noah’s Ark that came first wasn’t that important, after all what was important was the message of the story, or event. But this is the age of technology; a knowledgeable Christian needs to know when events in the bible took place.
Think about it! What does it look like, when someone asks; Well when did Moses free the people from Egypt? How do you answer that, when you don’t know when your biblical historical events took place?
In this day and age when Gnostic beliefs are growing, when people want knowledge, we need to supply that knowledge to the new Christians or to those who ask us the questions.
What Can Be Done?
To learn your bible timeline, you can find the information in the bible, if you carefully write down each date and study the bible for many years. You can even buy one of the many books to add to your collection on bible dates and history. In fact, you probably need several of these books. You can memorize dates and times, and study all of it for long periods of time, and thus become knowledgeable on the bible timeline. But is this really the answer?
The Easy Bible Timeline
There is a much easier way of finding out which biblical events took place in similar time frames, and which were drawn further apart. There are bible timelines that are created already. These charts allow you to see when an event happened, and when more than one event happened in different areas. You can find this type of bible timeline online. They are easy to use and very visual.
It is a way of putting biblical events into real time. When you know and can place a biblical event within history, you feel closer to the event and understand why it took place. How can you preach on the relevance of the bible if you cannot be relevant and don’t even know when the events happened?
A timeline can give the students you are teaching a real visual image of when the biblical character or biblical event happened, and this helps them connect with the event or the person. Without a timeline, the Bible just seems to be a hodge podge of interesting stories with parables we can learn from, but there is no reality. On the other hand if it is referenced to other events that were happening at the same time, then biblical history takes on new meaning for us.

Rhetoric and Ethic: The Politics of Biblical Studies $20 “In this major study, leading feminist biblical critic Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza focuses on Paul and his interpreters. She questions the apolitical ethos of biblical scholarship and argues for an alternative rooted in a critical understanding of language as a form of power. Modern biblical criticism, she reasons, derives much of its methodology and inspiration from an outdated notion of modern science. It professes value-neutrality and detachment from the world of politics and history. Yet, Schussler Fiorenza maintains, this posture belies an objectivity that fails to engage the sociopolitical context of both the text and today’s reader. It also does not recognize the rhetorical character of biblical texts and readings. If language is understood in the sense of ancient rhetorics as a form of power that constitutes reality, then an ethics of interpretation is called for. The task of biblical studies is to identify and assess the ethical resources and moral visions of biblical religions. “Only then,” Schussler Fiorenza contends, “will bibical studies be a significant partner in the global struggles seeking justice and well-being for all.”" |

Taxonomic Charts of Theology and Biblical Studies $19.99 “Theology and biblical studies comprise a vast array of interrelated topics and disciplines. But the ways in which the different areas of study fit together may not be readily apparent to seminary students and lay persons. Taxonomic Charts of Theology and Biblical Studies makes obscure relationships clear. It systematically provides: 1. A visual tracing of all major areas of theology and biblical studies 2. A glossary/index that gives brief definitions — By revealing the connection between such areas of study as archaeology, geography, and Old and New Testament studies, and then breaking each category down in orderly detail, Taxonomic Charts of Theology and Biblical Studies gives the student a sound understanding of the relationship, importance, and use of various, seemingly unrelated, topics.” |
