Why You Ought to Have a Good quality Pair of Sunglasses
The first pair of genuine sunglasses went on sale at a Woolworths store in America in 1929. They were designed by Sam Foster and known as Foster Grants – a name that became famous all over the world within a few years. These were overtaken in popularity by Ray-Ban’s polarised Aviator-style glasses in 1937. Since then, just about every known fashion designer has considered sun glasses to be an essential part of their haute couture, making shopping for sun glasses a bewildering experience.
But although it is the frames we are interested in, we should first make sure we choose the right lenses to suit our needs. Sunglasses are meant to protect the eyes from the harmful effects of UV radiation, so before being dazzled by the frames, we should ensure that the lenses do their job properly. When buying sunglasses, therefore, make sure the lenses offer 100% protection from UV light.
The tint of the lenses is another important factor to consider. The way light is filtered by different colour tints to suit different optical purposes and conditions was first discovered in the eighteenth century. Nowadays, different coloured tints are recommended for different uses and you will have noticed different sportsmen wearing different colour tints. Grey tints are usually recommended for drivers as they provide protection from glare without distorting colour so that, for examples, traffic lights can still be clearly seen. In many aqua sports yellow or rose tinted lenses are favoured. Green filters out blue, just as brown does, though with less distortion.
When buying ready-to-wear sunglasses, always inspect the lens closely for imperfections and distortions that may affect your vision. If a graduated tint is used, check that the shades change evenly from top to bottom. If they claim to be polarized, check that they really are by rotating them to see if they break up horizontal rays. Anti-reflective coatings are preferable to plain glass. If you are buying prescription sunglasses, it is well worth paying for a scratch resistant coat to be applied.
And now you are ready to consider the frame. Try to choose one that suits the shape of your face and your colouring and also feels comfortable to wear. Most people want designer frames, but no matter how good the designer, if they are not comfortable to wear, you will not be happy with them. Try on as many frames as you can to get an idea of exactly what suits you before narrowing down your choice. Oval faces suit most styles, while round faces will look longer and thinner with rectangular frames, at least as wide as the face, or with brow bars.
Designer frames are beautifully crafted and instantly recognisable. They are beloved by the stars and desired by everyone who wants more than just functional glasses. Christian Dior frames have long been standard-setters for their bold, distinctive appearance and the evocative glamour of the famed Dior logo. The Dior 3 range, with the inverted silver D at the hinge, is one of the most popular designs.
Equally distinctive and immediately recognisable are the stylish frames from Gucci with their double G logo as favoured this year by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Nicole Scherzinger and Tara Palmer Tomkinson; and the elegant frames of Chanel, chosen this year by smart ladies like Kate Hudson, Courtney Cox and Kate Winslet. However, check in any celebrity’s collection and you are certain to find at least one pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses – most likely the Aviator or Wayfarer frames.
Whatever your preferred style, designer frames are now more accessible and affordable than ever before. Whether you are buying ‘off-the peg’ or looking for prescription sunglasses, it is well worth checking out the vast collections available online, where prices are likely to be far more affordable than the high street.

Chicago $5.49 The movie version of Kander and Ebb’s Chicago was long in the making, but it’s well worth the wait. Director Rob Marshall’s main change was to turn the classic musical numbers into fantasy sequences, but of course this isn’t obvious on CD. Most importantly, the arrangements are bursting with life while being true to the show’s spirit, and the casting is simply inspired. Catherine Zeta-Jones actual… |
